So how many times do you wish you could drive like this? This is some footage of a Humvee traveling down a street in Iraq. You can tell which drivers have seen a Humvee in their rear view before and get the heck out of the way. It’s a little scary, though – the reason they drive like that is because spending too much time in one spot could mean not making it to your final destination. We salute our troops and thank them for their hard work! Show your support with Military Magnets. I’ve got this one on my Hummer.

GM has introduced a cool new toy which may be coming to Hummers in model year 2008. Coming in April of this year, it’s a newly designed key fob that lets you do a multitude of tasks while away from your vehicle. The fob will allow owners to check tire pressure in each tire, the odometer reading, and the amount of gas left in the tank. Some will even be able to roll down electric windows, change radio station settings, and let you know if you locked your doors. GM says it will operate at 4 – 6 times the range of competitors, and will also set comfort settings like mirrors and seat positions before entry. No official word from GM if it will be available on Hummers, but they did say “The device will be a $150 option on Cadillac Escalade luxury SUVs and other full-size GM SUVs, pickups and crossover-utility vehicles.” One can only expect that with the new interior enhancements in the 2008 Model Hummer H2, the new key fob design will be compatible.

The nice people at Fourwheeler.com have just released their newest review in their four part series, testing long-term use of the Hummer H3. The reviewers liked that it had the small (37 ft) turning radius, which they said was helpful both on the trail and in tight parking lots. They also had it in extreme heat (125 degrees) and never came close to overheating. Gas mileage in the H3 was impressive as well – now with a few miles on it, they were able to log one tank at an average of 17.8 mpg. An airbag light popped on when off-roading, but was just a false reading and was reset by the local dealer. The reviewers also attempted to spend the night in it, and didn’t realize that the seats didn’t fold down completely flat to make this feat more comfortable. I’d suggest a $100 tent and a $20 air mattress to put next to the H3 – your back will thank you!

It’s the news that many current Hummer H3 owners have been waiting for – the Roof Marker Lamp assembly is once again available. Hummer made the announcement in the middle of December, but it wasn’t until yesterday that the updated components reached dealerships. They were originally on quarantine and could not be installed because of a wind noise issue at higher speeds. The new fix was approved by GM and then mass produced in order to retro-fit lamp packages already on dealer shelves. So good news – it’s now possible to go to the dealership and have the Roof Marker Lamps added to your Hummer H3 for the first time in over six months!

We all know that the Hummer plant in South Africa is gearing up for production of the right-handed drive Hummer H3 to be distributed in all the non-US markets. GM has now released pictures of what the non-US version will look like and some changes that had to be adapted. I suspect many of the changes are for the tight restrictions in the EU. Although many are probably unnoticeable, GM’s global design team had to re-engineer hundreds of the H3s parts for the international version. Most of the obvious design changes came with the exterior lighting. “Headlights have an oval design with a chrome surround. Clear lenses with amber bulbs, specially designed side blinker lamps and a unique tail lamp design were also required to meet international lighting requirements. The external radii were changed on mirrors, front fascias and tow hooks. Additional fender flares were added to cover the tires, which must be inside the body in some countries. A redesigned rear bumper contains a new Rear Protection Under Run Device and rear fog lamps.” The weirdest part to me is that rear run-under device. I suppose it’s for smaller cars that are rear-ending you to minimize their damage.

The day before the charity auction, organizers were “optimistically hoping” for the Hummer to go for 6 figures. Yesterday they were blown away when the founder of Remax, Dave Liniger, put in the final bid of $1 million. At that point, the business man he was bidding against, “turned around, he put his arms around me and he says, ‘Hey, you buy the car, you get the car. I’ll add 250 to it.’” The proceeds to the Fisher House Foundation, a group that builds homes for families of hospitalized military personnel. Liniger himself is a Vietnam Veteran.

CNN’s Hummer has spent time in Iraq, it’s been “Overhauled” on TLC, and now its up for grabs. Late last year CNN announced its plans to put the recently restored Hummer on the auction block — and give the proceeds to the Fisher House Foundation — a group that builds homes for families of hospitalized military personnel. I saw this on headlines news this morning – and we wish them the best of luck on getting a nice check to hand over to the Fisher House Foundation!

Hummer proved that high gas prices and political turmoil wouldn’t slow them down in 2006 — sales numbers are up nearly 25% from the year before. Total Hummer sales hit 66,617 – and over 50,000 of those were Hummer H3s. The increase in sales makes Hummer one of the truck industry’s fastest growing brands. Now, with the new South Africa plant online we’re bound to see an even bigger increase in 2007, when sales abroad bring in an even higher percentage of total Hummer sales.
