From the Associated Press:
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — General Motors Co. will halt Hummer production next week at its Louisiana plant until sale of the brand to a Chinese company is completed.
Hummer spokesman Nick Richards said Wednesday it was unclear whether jobs would be affected at the Shreveport plant, which also builds Chevrolet pickup trucks. The plant is the only one making Hummers.
The AP story quotes Richards as saying that there is “sufficient inventory in the field” to sustain dealers while the sale progresses through the regulatory approval process.

Isn’t there a plant in South Africa? May be I am mistaken… Any news on Hummer supply / demand on a glabal scale?

They closed the plant in South Africa last year. I work at the Shreveport plant and today they made the announcment that we would stop building Hummers. We also heard that the right hand drive equipment from S. Africa arrived at the plant today. Hopefully the Chinese will sign soon, our jobs here depend on it.

Why are the chinese regulatory taking so long?

…..it’s all about the details dude.
They’re prolly working an agreement to include Shreveport plant as well.
Not to mention Union BS if and when they take over Shreveport assembly. I’m sure LOTS of political crap needs to be worked out if Shreveport will be Hummer’s assembly HQ.

I find it odd that they have enough supply. I was at a dealer a few weeks ago looking at a 2008 H2, and they were begging me to trade-in my wife’s H3 as the demand for those was good and difficult to find them to sell. Or at least that is what I was told. I do see more and more H3/H3T driving around these days.

I wonder if someone else would set-up to purchase if China gov’t doesn’t approve? The Hummer brand doesn’t sound like its the issue.
January 22nd, 2010 at 3:21 pm
It’s totally not the brand. It’s the communist govt. having a hand in everything that happens there.
