A group of Hummer owners have dubbed themselves HOPE, or Hummer Owners Prepared for Emergencies. This group travels to disaster areas to aid in damage assesments, and if need be medical assistance. HOPE was created after floods in 2001 in West Virginia, when a group of Hummer owners banded together to help. HOPE members are Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers, and are certified in technical off-road driving.

Hummer Announces 6 Year Partnership with Red Cross
The American Red Cross announced today that it has entered into a partnership with HUMMER — a partnership that will provide the American Red Cross with vehicles and cash totaling $4 million. Through 2010, a total of 72 HUMMER vehicles will be donated by the GM Foundation. The Foundation will also contribute $100,000 annually for six years to strengthen communities’ ability to respond to emergencies. Some Hummer H1 owners have already teamed up to become Red Cross certified, and use their vehicles during emergencies, most recently along the gulf coast region.
Robotic H1 Takes Pole Position
After struggling with qualifying rounds the Carnegie Mellon team that built the driverless H1 has claimed the number one spot for the upcoming semi-finals. During earlier rounds, the Hummer rolled and crushed some navigation components, but the team remained confident in their ability to be ready. Looks like they were — now only time will tell if they’ll claim the 2 million dollar prize for a first place finish.
